Ban on cars and bikes among council options for Swanston St
inmelbourne | Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 | 1 Comment »A PROPOSAL to remove all cars and bicycles from Swanston St will be put to Melbourne City Council this month. The option to make Swanston St a purely pedestrian and tram strip will be added to six options released to council on the future of what Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said was Melbourne’s “main artery”.
- Increasing car and bicycle access through widening Swanston St and providing dedicated a 24 hour vehicle lane and a 24 hour bicycle lane;
- Increasing tram and car access with a larger footpath and raised platforms for tram stops, with dedicated bicycle lanes;
- Decreased car access with wider footpaths and out of hours delivery access, with dedicated bicycle lanes on the footpath.
when will the state government & Melb city council get the cyclists off our city footpaths, everyday I am ‘buzzed’by cyclists ‘flying’along with little regard to pedestrian safety. It is so very dangerous & its about time this practice is stopped. Authorities should not be waiting until someone gets seriously injured from being hit by a cyclist & then beginning to investigate….please help keep the footpath safe for pedestrians.
