We can highly recommend this quiet little cafe. We have found the efficient and friendly service, simple, clean decor, with fresh food and good service that is sadly lacking in many other establishments. It's really relaxing. You'll enjoy the experience.

13 years for taking someones life. what a joke. a child will be raised without meeting their father due to this guys "addiction" and actions. the fact that it took him to destroy a familys life before a jail convinction occurred is ridiculous. if this was his first offense, then maybe 13 years would be a suitable punishment. but this his 4th serious traffic offense therefore he should never be allowed out again.

Yes it's very disappointing that such racially bias sentiments seem to come from the chief commissioners mouth. "try to look as poor as you can" ? Why is that required ? Because it's not OK for people of colour to look and feel proud ? So they are supposed to look like poor measly hopeless souls ? Come on you are pulling my leg commissioner. You are not serious in such denigrating remarks are you ? And yet you seem to have time to prance around with the fairies as if to pretend you give a dam about human rights ?

I agree, as it stands, the police, appearing to be in denial and by down playing this whole issue seem complicit to these racist hate crimes. In fact it appears that police inadequate response to these crimes, might actually be encouraging them. Thus one might think they are accomplices to such crimes. Very disappointing. If we can't trust the police to do the right thing, who can we trust ? and what hope is there for the rest of us when the shit hits the fan ?

That advice is ludicrous and inept. How can we have confidence in our police when the chief commissioner comes up with that nonsense advice. Everyone regardless of race, religion etc... has the right to expect equal treatment in our community and the law should do everything it can to uphold that right. Such statements from the man in charge only make the police look racist and indifferent to unfair treatment of students from foreign cultures. It seems we are happy to take their money and even rip them off, but when it comes to basic human rights, foreign students are on their own. That is the reality and there is no way to dress it up any other way, other that by lying and presenting a facade that all is well. Bullshit, all is not well.

The police need to make arrests, lock racists and other criminals up and throw away the key. Only then will there be something approaching peace in our streets and Australia's reputation of being a rich diverse nation accepting of global citizens and leading the world by positive example, be restored. Shame Shame Shame on you Commissioner.

Those really interested in the false statistics and cases where people are falsely arrested for this crime should check out the site Inquisition21 , and if you google Laundering Statistics you will come accross an excellent academic article that debunks much of what the Police state as 'truth' when making public statements about the issue of Child Pornography.

Surely the crime does have to be tackled, however creating a moral panic by overstating the issue and stating false and highly exaggerated statistics is irresponsible.

On top of that, the shear number of people who are falsely accused of this crime should astound the ordinary reader. For example, during Operation Irenic (2007/08) the AFP issued 303 search warrants. Yet, only 100 people were arrested or proceeded against by summons. That means getting it wrong in over 2 cases out of 3! Add to that the fact that only 62% of people are actually convicted, because the images turn out to be of adults rather than children!

It is also a well known fact that most of the child porn sites still in existence are sting sites run by the FBI. They boast of having the largest child pornography collection in the world. The local police are then able to get around entrapment allegations because the information comes to them via Interpol from the FBI!

Most astounding of all, the number of innocent people arrested on around 2003/4 will shock people because police acted on credit card transactions. In the UK, it is estimated that up to 1500 people were wrongly convicted on credit card transactions where they were actually victims of credit card fraud (a much more widespread and hidden problem than people are aware of). There are cases where people falsely accused of this crime committed suicide and it was proven after they killed themselves that they were innocent. The UK case relates to Operation ORE. The Australian Police acted on the same information that the UK Police got (from the FBI via Interpol). Information (pretty strong as the source comes from one current serving police officer and one ex police officer who resigned after he saw the amount of corruption involved) says that police acted on the tips and KNEW of the credit card fraud at the time, but persued convictions because of the politically driven moral panic caused by the police at the time to lobby for funding. There is apparently a similar situation here in Australia.

The case is about to hit the courts in the UK, where the corruption is about to be revealed.

How about applying the current laws properly, we don't need tougher laws, we just need the police to do their job properly. (Read the case of the poor chap goaled for child sex tourism because the AFP could not do thier job! Courier Mail 04/02/10)

Jenny Macklin is correct in her comments. Having lived in one of the prescribed Aboriginal communities for the period of the Intervention to date, it is obvious to me that problems of alcohol and violence are now way less that they were prior to its inception.
However, the increased numbers of police, together with the decline in serious time-consuming cases and more restrictive laws about grog mean that the police have more capacity to attend to the volume of crime (particularly lower-level alcohol-related crimes such as minor DV incidents and disturbances) than they did previously. Consequently we see the paradox of increased recording of lesser crimes in circumstances where absolute levels of both serious and less serious alcohol-related crimes have actually declined.

Dear Stacey, thank you very much for the offer, but with respect, if you would like to exchange links, it is customary for the requestor to link first - in good faith - but also, we are mainly interested in linking with sites that have a relevance to the Melbourne Metropolitan area, your site seems to be mainly of international news issues, therefore, unfortunately, linking to non-Melb. sites would not benefit our google ranking prospects, so we must decline your offer at this time.
